Jewelry Care

While sterling silver itself does not rust, it is susceptible to tarnishing and a loss of shine and plating when not cared for properly or when consistently exposed to chemicals found in perfumes, lotions, soap, and chlorine. It's important to note that jewelry, even when made of sterling silver, is not indestructible and may break if worn during intense activities. To help maintain the top condition of your silver jewelry, consider the following tips:

Polishing Sterling Silver

DO THIS ONLY IF YOUR PIECE TARNISHES.

Polishing sterling silver with baking soda and hot water is a straightforward and effective method. Here's a step-by-step guide:

  1. Line the Bowl with Aluminum Foil: Line the bottom of a bowl with aluminum foil, ensuring that the shiny side is facing up. The aluminum foil helps enhance the cleaning process.
  2. Place the Silver in the Bowl: Put the sterling silver items into the bowl, ensuring that they make direct contact with the aluminum foil.
  3. Create a Baking Soda Solution: In a separate container, mix a few tablespoons of baking soda with hot water. Stir until the baking soda is mostly dissolved. The water should be hot but not boiling.
  4. Pour the Solution over the Silver: Pour the baking soda solution over the silver items, making sure they are fully submerged. The reaction between the baking soda, hot water, and aluminum foil helps remove tarnish from the silver.
  5. Let It Soak: Allow the silver to soak in the solution for a around 15 minutes. The tarnish should begin to lift during this time.
  6. Rinse with Water: After soaking, remove the jewelry piece and rinse off the solution with water (preferably filtered water).
  7. Gently Polish with a Soft Cloth: Use a soft cloth to gently rub the silver and remove any remaining tarnish. Be careful not to scratch the silver.
